Myth vs Fact #4

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 2:190-195…And fight in the Way of Allâh those who fight you…And kill them wherever you find them…And fight them until there is no more Fitnah and worship is for Allâh…And spend in the Cause of Allâh (i.e. Jihâd of all kinds, etc.) and do not throw yourselves into destruction (by not spending your wealth in the Cause of Allâh)…
Tafsir Righteousness comes from Taqwa

The Order to fight to eradicate Shirk and Kufr
The Order to fight until there is no more Fitnah
The Command to spend in the Cause of Allah
Allah Commands His Messenger to Perform Jihad

Bottom Line: From the King Fahd Complex: ayeh & commentary.
190. And fight in the Way of Allâh[1] those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allâh likes not the transgressors. [This Verse is the first one that was revealed in connection with Jihâd, but it was supplemented by another (9:36)].

[1](V.2:190) Al-Jihâd (holy fighting) in Allâh’s Cause (with full force of numbers and weaponry) is given the utmost importance in Islâm and is one of its pillar (on which it stands). By Jihâd Islâm is established, Allâh’s Word is made superior, (His Word being Lâ ilaha illallâh which means none has the right to be worshipped but Allâh), and His Religion (Islâm) is propagated. By abandoning Jihâd (may Allâh protect us from that) Islâm is destroyed and the Muslims fall into an inferior position; their honour is lost, their lands are stolen, their rule and authority vanish. Jihâd is an obligatory duty in Islâm on every Muslim, and he who tries to escape from this duty, or does not in his innermost heart wish to fulfil this duty, dies with one of the qualities of a hypocrite.
Narrated ‘Abdullâh bin Mas‘ûd رضي الله عنه: I asked Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم “O Allâh’s Messenger! What is the best deed?” He replied, “To offer the Salât (prayers) at their early fixed stated times.” I asked, “What is next in goodness?” He replied, “To be good and dutiful to your parents.” I further asked, “What is next in goodness?” He replied, “To participate in Jihâd in Allâh’s Cause.” I did not ask Allâh’s Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم anymore and if I had asked him more, he would have told me more. (Sahih Al-Bukhâri, Vol.4, Hadîth No.41).

While the ayeh is about defensive fighting, the translators use their commentary to define Jihad in more aggressive terms.

  • Holy fighting in Allah’s cause;
    • establishes Islam
    • Allah’s word made superior
    • Islam is propagated.
  • By abandoning Jihad:
    • Islam is destroyed
    • Muslims subordinated
    • honor lost
    • lands stolen
    • lose power

9:36. Verily, the number of months with Allâh is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allâh on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islâmic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein, and fight against the Mushrikûn (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allâh) collectively[2] as they fight against you collectively. But know that Allâh is with those who are Al-Muttaqûn (the pious – See V.2:2).
[2](V.9:36) See the footnotes of (V.2:193) and (V.8:73).

2:193 is about retaliatory fighting, but its footnote quotes a hadith similar to Bukhari4.52.196 , which quotes Moe as saying he was ordered to fight aggressively. The footnote refers us to 8:39, which is discussed in Myth vs Fact #1.

Note the fact that 9:36 follows close after 9:29, which declares aggressive war upon “people of the Scripture” and is discussed in Myth vs Fact #2.

It is obvious from 8:39, 9:29, the definition given in the footnote to 2:190 and Reliance of the Traveller O9.0, that Jihad is not limited to defensive action, but includes aggressive conquest.

Note that spending in the cause of Allah, defined in 2:195, as participation in Jihad,  is referenced again  in
8:60 and 47:38. Whenever Allah mentions spending, Jihad is what he has in mind except when discussing charity and household management..
