Myth vs Fact #52

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 8:57-60 So if you gain the mastery over them in war, punish them severely in order to disperse those who are behind them, so that they may learn a lesson. And let not those who disbelieve think that they can outstrip (escape from the punishment). Verily, they will never be able to save themselves (from Allah’s Punishment).  And make ready against them all you can of power, including steeds of war (tanks, planes, missiles, artillery, etc.) to threaten the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides whom, you may not know but whom Allah does know. And whatever you shall spend in the Cause of Allah shall be repaid unto you, and you shall not be treated unjustly.

Tafsir:
Bottom
Line:
Relate this: So if you gain the mastery over them in war, punish them severely in order to disperse those who are behind them, so that they may learn a lesson. to the final sentence of 59:2 :
Then take admonition, O you with eyes (to see).

Those are clearly tokens of terrorism, as is 8:60, which is made clear by Yusuf Ali, Rodwell & Sale.  “to strike terror into”

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 8:41 And know that whatever of war-booty that you may gain, verily one-fifth (1/5th) of it is assigned to Allâh, and to the Messenger, and to the near relatives [of the Messenger (Muhammad)], (and also) the orphans, Al-Masâkin (the poor) and the wayfarer, if you have believed in Allâh and in that which We sent down to Our slave (Muhammad) on the Day of criterion (between right and wrong), the Day when the two forces met (the battle of Badr) – And Allâh is Able to do all things.
Tafsir: Ruling on the Spoils of War (Ghanimah and Fai )
The Order to fight to eradicate Shirk and Kufr
Bottom Line: Allocation of spoils is not a subject relevant to a religion of peace. The existence of 8:1, 8:41, 33:27 & 48:20 stands in evidence of the fact that Islam is a war machine, not a religion.

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 8:39 And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and polytheism: i.e. worshipping others besides Allâh) and the religion (worship) will all be for Allâh Alone [in the whole of the world ]. But if they cease (worshipping others besides Allâh), then certainly, Allâh is All-Seer of what they do.

Tafsir:
Bottom Line: This ayeh is an open ended command to make war on Kuffar until only Allah is worshiped. It has neither chronological nor geographic limits.  Note the title of Ibn Kathir’s tafsir of this ayeh. The Order to fight… .

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 8:17 You killed them not, but Allah killed them. And you (Muhammad SAW) threw not when you did throw but Allah threw, that He might test the believers by a fair trial from Him. Verily, Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower.
Tafsir: Allah’s Signs displayed during Badr, And throwing Sand in the Eyes of the Disbelievers

Fleeing from Battle is prohibited, and its Punishment

Bottom Line: See how peaceful Islam is! And Allah is so merciful!

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 8:15-16 O you who believe! When you meet those who disbelieve, in a battle-field, never turn your backs to them. And whoever turns his back to them on such a day – unless it be a stratagem of war, or to retreat to a troop (of his own), – he indeed has drawn upon himself wrath from Allah. And his abode is Hell, and worst indeed is that destination
Tafsir: Allah commands the Angels to fight and support the Believers

Fleeing from Battle is prohibited, and its Punishment

Bottom Line: Run from a fight, go to Hell. Is this a proper doctrine for the “religion of peace”?

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 8:7-8 And (remember) when Allah promised you (Muslims) one of the two parties (of the enemy i.e. either the army or the caravan) that it should be yours, you wished that the one not armed (the caravan) should be yours, but Allah willed to justify the truth by His Words and to cut off the roots of the disbelievers (i.e. in the battle of Badr). That He might cause the truth to triumph and bring falsehood to nothing, even though the Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.) hate it.

Tafsir: The Fruits of Perfect Faith
Bottom Line: On ths surface, this is nearly innocent. Scratch the surface and see what is beneath it. Read the Tafsir and the context.

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 8:1 They ask you (O Muhammad) about the spoils of war. Say: “The spoils are for Allâh and the Messenger.” So fear Allâh and adjust all matters of difference among you, and obey Allâh and His Messenger (Muhammad), if you are believers.

Tafsir: The Reason behind revealing Ayah 8:1
Another Reason behind revealing the Ayah 8:1
Bottom Line: Islam engages in aggressive warfare and accrues spoils. Islam is mercenary, not beneficent.

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 5:56 And whosoever takes Allâh, His Messenger, and those who have believed, as Protectors, then the party of Allâh will be the victorious.

Tafsir: The Prohibition of Taking the Jews, Christians and Enemies of Islam as Friends

Threatening to Replace the Believers With Another People if They Revert from Islam

Bottom Line: The token of triumphalism is highlighted.  If you click the link to the verse and read the surrounding verses, you will discover intense animosity to Judaism and Christianity.

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 5:54 O you who believe! Whoever from among you turns back from his religion (Islâm), Allâh will bring a people whom He will love and they will love Him; humble towards the believers, stern towards the disbelievers, fighting in the Way of Allâh, and never afraid of the blame of the blamers. That is the Grace of Allâh which He bestows on whom He wills. And Allâh is AllSufficient for His creatures’ needs, AllKnower.

Tafsir:
Bottom Line: To fully understand this ayeh, you must read this hadith from Sunan Abu Dawud.
Book 23, Number 3455:

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar:

I heard the Apostle of Allah, (peace_be_upon_him) say: When you enter into the inah transaction, hold the tails of oxen, are pleased with agriculture, and give up conducting jihad (struggle in the way of Allah). Allah will make disgrace prevail over you, and will not withdraw it until you return to your original religion.

Let me state if in mathematical terminology:
Islam = Jihad.

Myth Fact
Islam: Religion of peace. 5:52 O you who believe! Do your duty to Allah and fear Him. Seek the means of approach to Him, and strive hard in His Cause as much as you can. So that you may be successful.
Tafsir: Chastising the Hypocrites

Hypocrites Wait and Watch what Happens to Muslims

Praising the Qur’an; the Command to Refer to the Qur’an for Judgment

The Prohibition of Taking the Jews, Christians and Enemies of Islam as Friends

The Attitudes of the Hypocrites and the Ways in which Allah tests People

Bottom Line: Striving hard in Allah’s cause is a reference to Jihad: fighting to make Islam dominant.

The outstanding characteristic of hypocrites is their reluctance to join in Jihad. Read the tafsir of this verse with care.
