33:18 Allâh already knows those among you who keep back (men) from fighting in Allâh’s Cause, and those who say to their brethren “Come here towards us,” while they (themselves) come not to the battle except a little |

How the Believers were tested, and the Position of the Hypocrites during the Battle of Al-Khandaq |
Bottom Line: |
Is there anything more important to Islam than jihad?
Turn to page 449 of The Life of Muhammad and read about this in detail.
Continue to page 451 and examine the story containing this quote: [Emphasis added.]
“I said: ‘0 you, dearer than father or mother, what is the meaning of this light beneath your pick as you strike?’ He said: ‘Did you
really see that, Salman? The first means that God has opened up to me the Yaman; the second Syria and the west; and the third the east.’ One whom I dp not suspect told me that Abu Hurayra used to say when these
countries were conquered in the time of ‘Umar and ‘Uthman and after, ‘Conquer where you will, by God, you have not conquered and to the resurrection day you will not conquer a city whose keys God had not given
beforehand to Muhammad.”

29:10 Of mankind are some who say: “We believe in Allâh,” but if they are made to suffer for the sake of Allâh, they consider the trial of mankind as Allâh’s punishment, and if victory comes from your Lord, (the hypocrites) will say: “Verily! We were with you (helping you).” Is not Allâh Best Aware of what is in the breast of the ‘Alamîn (mankind and jinns). |
Tafsir |
The Attitudes of the Hypocrites and the Ways in which Allah tests People |
Bottom Line |
Jihad is a means of testing. Refer to 3:140. “suffer for the sake of Allâh” is a code phrase for jihad. |

13:41 See they not that We gradually reduce the land (of disbelievers, by giving it to the believers, in war victories) from its outlying borders. And Allâh judges, there is none to put back His Judgement and He is Swift at reckoning. |
Tafsir |
|
Bottom Line: |
Allah expands Dar al-Islam by shrinking Dar al-Harb by means of raids across borders, seizing territory. Learn, and know that this fatal fact is confirmed by Islamic law. I quote from Umdat as-Salik Book O, Chapter 24, Section 9, which lists 8 duties of local rulers under the Caliph.
-8- and if the area has a border adjacent to enemy lands, an eighth duty arises, namely to undertake jihad against enemies, dividing the spoils of battle among combatants, and setting aside fifth (def: o10.3) for deserving recipients.

9:123 O you who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are close to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allâh is with those who are the Al-Muttaqûn (the pious – see V.2:2). |
Tafsir |
|
Bottom Line: |
This ayeh is a clear order to make war on Kaffirun. Note the titles of the first & last listed tafsir. This obviously confirms 9:29. |

9:120 It was not becoming of the people of Al-Madinah and the bedouins of the neighbourhood to remain behind Allah’s Messenger (Muhammad SAW when fighting in Allah’s Cause) and (it was not becoming of them) to prefer their own lives to his life. That is because they suffer neither thirst nor fatigue, nor hunger in the Cause of Allah, nor they take any step to raise the anger of disbelievers nor inflict any injury upon an enemy but is written to their credit as a deed of righteousness. Surely, Allah wastes not the reward of the Muhsinun |
Tafsir |
Allah the Exalted here explains His order to Muslims to march forth with the Messenger of Allah for the battle of Tabuk.
Rewards of Jihad
The Order to speak the Truth |
Bottom Line: |
This Surah is about the gazwat against Tabuk. Its purpose is to reprimand those who refused to join the expedition. Tabk was an offensive mission. Note that inflicting injury upon an enemy is a deed of righteousness. You are looking at clear proof of the fact that Islam is aggressive, not peaceful. |
